ASME Codes & Compliance FAQ

Understanding ASME certification, code stamps, and regulatory requirements for safety and relief valves.

What is ASME Section I?

ASME Section I (Power Boilers) governs safety valves for fired steam boilers. Section I valves carry the V code stamp. They have strict requirements: set pressure cannot be field-adjusted, must be capacity-certified, and must be replaced by authorized facilities. Aquatrol 740 Series is Section I certified.

What is ASME Section VIII?

ASME Section VIII (Unfired Pressure Vessels) covers pressure vessels not directly exposed to fire, including air receivers, heat exchangers, and process vessels. Section VIII valves carry the UV code stamp. Most industrial safety and relief valves fall under Section VIII. Set pressure can be adjusted within the spring range by qualified facilities.

What is the National Board?

The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors registers ASME-certified pressure relief devices. Every ASME safety valve has a National Board number on its nameplate providing full traceability. The NB number confirms the valve was manufactured by an ASME-authorized facility.

Is an ASME safety valve required by law?

In most US jurisdictions, yes. ASME-certified safety valves are required on all fired boilers (Section I), most unfired pressure vessels above certain thresholds (Section VIII), air compressor receivers, and any pressurized equipment covered by state or local boiler codes. Insurance companies also typically require ASME-certified valves.
