ASME Section VIII Safety Valves — Unfired Pressure Vessel Protection

ASME Section VIII governs unfired pressure vessels holding steam, gas, or liquid under pressure. Safety valve protection is mandatory—your vessel must be equipped with a certified, properly sized relief valve. Aquatrol manufactures ASME Section VIII certified valves with third-party capacity testing and full compliance documentation.

Why Aquatrol ASME Section VIII Valves

Unfired pressure vessels—air receivers, surge tanks, steam accumulators, and process equipment—store dangerous stored energy. Section VIII mandates certified relief valve protection sized for the vessel’s maximum operating pressure and capacity. Aquatrol’s certified valves carry third-party test documentation proving compliance and protecting your equipment from catastrophic failure.

Section VIII sizing differs from Section I because stored pressure, not continuous generation, defines risk. We size your valve based on vessel volume, operating pressure, and media type (steam, gas, liquid, or corrosive fluid). Our engineers provide pressure/capacity curves and documentation that boiler inspectors and insurance companies require for compliance.

Many unfired vessels have unique requirements—cryogenic storage, high-pressure gas, sanitary food-grade, or heavily corroded environments. Aquatrol manufactures custom Section VIII valves in stainless steel, exotic materials, and specialty configurations. Every valve includes engineering validation and third-party certification proving protection.

Series Pressure Range Media Certification
55 30–500 PSIG Steam, air, gas, liquid ASME Section VIII
560 30–1,000 PSIG Cryogenic gas ASME Section VIII
140 20–1,000 PSIG Compressed air ASME Section VIII
560 20–500 PSIG Potable water ASME Section VIII
740 50–300 PSIG Sanitary media ASME Section VIII

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ASME Section I and Section VIII?
Section I covers fired boilers where combustion generates pressure continuously. Section VIII covers unfired vessels storing pre-generated steam, gas, or liquid. Section VIII vessels are also lower-risk because they have no ongoing generation—relief valve sizing and inspection intervals differ accordingly.
How often must Section VIII relief valves be tested?
ASME Code typically requires annual capacity testing and visual inspection. Some vessels operating at higher pressures or critical applications may require more frequent testing. Insurance policies often have additional requirements. Our technical team can recommend testing frequency based on your vessel class and application.
Can I retrofit a Section VIII valve on an older vessel?
Yes, provided the valve capacity and pressure rating are appropriate for the vessel. If the vessel lacks current certification or the old valve is worn, replacement with a current ASME Section VIII certified valve is recommended. We can evaluate your vessel and advise on proper sizing.
What certifications must my relief valve have?
At minimum, ASME Section VIII stamp and third-party capacity test documentation. Depending on your application, you may also need API, PED (EU), CSA, or other certifications. Our technical team confirms all required certifications before recommending a valve for your vessel.
