Boiler Valve Protection Fundamentals
Boiler safety is regulated by ASME Section I Code, state boiler inspectors, and insurance companies. Your boiler must be protected by at least one ASME-certified safety valve sized to release steam at the boiler’s maximum safe operating pressure (MAWP) before dangerous overpressure occurs. Undersizing the valve leaves the boiler unprotected; oversizing causes system deadheading and prevents safe relief.
Proper sizing requires knowledge of your boiler’s maximum firing rate (steam generation capacity in pounds per hour), fuel type, and MAWP.
